Overview
Learning that you need surgery can be frightening. That's why it's important to reach out and connect to other people who have had similar experiences. It's a little easier to confront the challenge you're facing when you know someone is there to offer support.
Here are some pointers that can help you interact with your friends and family so you can get the support you need:
- Identify what you need. Determine specifically what you need from others. Do you need someone to talk to? Do you need a friend or family member to go with you to the doctor? Someone to help with chores or just be there when you get home?
- Asking for Support. Sometimes friends and family members want to help but are unsure how to or if you even want it. Speaking up and asking for what you need may sound simple, but it's an important step.
- Thank those that help you. Always try to have an attitude of gratitude. Make sure those around you know they are appreciated and loved. A simple thank you for support after surgery can go a long way.
